A naming system for consistent Shopify product titles

Build product titles that remain clear when the catalog grows beyond the first few dozen items.

Product titles often become inconsistent because different people add products at different times. A small naming system creates clarity for customers and gives the catalog team a repeatable standard.

Choose the information that deserves the title

Start with the product identity, then add only the details customers use to distinguish variants or models. Do not force every specification into the title when it belongs in options, description or metafields.

Set order, punctuation and casing rules

Decide whether brand, model, material, size or color appears first and how separators are used. The rule should be short enough that anyone on the team can apply it without interpretation.

Test the rule on different product families

Apply the proposed structure to simple, configurable and long-named products. If it creates awkward or repetitive titles, refine the rule before updating the full catalog.
