Shopify supports manual and automated collections, but they solve different problems. The right choice depends on whether membership should be curated record by record or determined by repeatable product conditions.
Use manual collections for deliberate curation
Manual collections work well when the exact product selection matters more than a reusable rule. Gift guides, editorial selections and small campaign assortments are common examples. The trade-off is that every future addition or removal needs attention.
Use automated collections for stable rules
Automated collections are useful when products can be grouped by dependable conditions such as tags, vendor, product type or price. They scale better, but only if the underlying product data stays consistent.
Review the rule before changing the catalog
A broad tag or product-type edit can move many products into or out of automated collections. Before a bulk update, identify which collection rules depend on the fields you plan to change.
